The Rower’s Reward: Ann’s Pasties and a Legacy of the Oar

Posted by Ferg

At Ann’s Pasties, we often say our pasties are made with love, tradition, and a hearty helping of Cornish spirit. But there’s another secret ingredient, one that runs deep through our family’s veins: the sea, and the exhilarating sport of gig rowing.
Our connection to gig rowing is more than just sponsorship; it’s a legacy that began with Tony, Ann’s late husband. Tony wasn’t just a pasty enthusiast; he was a true pioneer of Cornish rowing. He started Cove rowing and was instrumental in introducing Ann to the sport she would come to love.

From Cove to County Champions: Tony’s Vision

Tony enjoyed immense success in Cove rowing, mastering the sliding seats that demanded precision and power. But his greatest impact came when winning Newquay Championships in the late 70’s, with Al Anderson & …. A few years later, Fergus, Tony’s son won the same competition with Al’s son Adam & …. Tony was a driving force, helping to establish Helford Gig Club, laying the groundwork for the thriving club we know today.

Inspired by Tony, Ann embraced the challenge of the oars. Her dedication and strength saw her achieve remarkable success, including two veteran gig rowing titles. Ann proudly rowed for Cadgwith, Helford, and Penryn, clubs that remain incredibly close to her heart. The camaraderie, the competition, and the feeling of slicing through the water were passions she shared with her family and community.

Fergus: Following The Family Tradition.

The rowing legacy continued with Fergus, Ann and Tony’s son. Fergus started his rowing journey at Cadgwith, but soon found his true home with Falmouth Gig Club at the age of 21. For the past 25 years (he’s now 46!), Fergus has previously captained for the club & has been a huge support, helping the club to win seven World Titles and seven County Championships – a testament to his dedication and the club’s unwavering spirit.

The Next Generation Takes the Oars

The sound of oars dipping into the water continues to echo through our family. Ann’s grandchildren, Rowan, Maebh, and Ellen, have all embraced gig rowing, carrying on the proud tradition. It’s a joy to see them on the water, building strength, teamwork, and a connection to their Cornish heritage.
Ann’s Pasties proudly supports Falmouth and Cadgwith Gig Clubs, providing the fuel and encouragement for these incredible athletes. We believe in the power of gig rowing – not just as a sport, but as a way of life that instils discipline, community, and a deep respect for our maritime history.
So, whether you’re a seasoned rower, a passionate supporter, or just someone looking for a taste of authentic Cornwall, we invite you to enjoy an Ann’s Pasty. And if you’ve ever thought about getting into gig rowing, we say, go for it! You might just discover a passion that runs as deep as the Cornish sea itself.
