There was only one person I’d ask to write this song for St Pirans’ day, Ben Bowden, we’ve spent years sharing our passion for Cornwall, we wanted this music collaboration to encapsulate what it means to be Cornish today, the song needed to reflect the authentic truth of what it means to live in the Duchy, not just the ice creams and beautiful views.
The stark reality is one of inequity, we have one of the largest gaps between rich and poor anywhere in Europe, the beauty we treasure is a double edged sword, it’s what attracts people here but conversely leads the locals to disappear, forced inland by the soaring house prices and lack of community, off to estates, abandoning the villages we originated from; the ghost villages of the winter months.
The battle is not lost, this is our Cornwall, our grit defines us, we weather a different kind of storm to our ancestors, but we do so with humour and creativity and we will survive.
